Introduction to "Getting Back to Basics" Series
There are lots of opinions in the Christian church about what discipleship really means. Take a trip down to your local Christian bookstore and you can see row after row of products offering you the best way to become a disciple of Jesus. Most involve reading the author’s opinion about the best way to do things, fill in a few blanks, and answer some questions. But, when you are finished, are you really any different?
We need more than just some tips and techniques. Life is too hard. We need more than just a certificate of accomplishment from the current best-selling book or workshop. As John Eldredge put it in his book, Waking the Dead, “Teach a man a rule and you help him solve a problem; teach a man to walk with God, and you help him solve the rest of his life.”
Discipleship is not about learning how to apply principles, it is about learning how to walk with God. This series we are calling Back to the Basics is going back to source. To learn to be like Jesus (a good definition of discipleship, by the way), we are going to focus our study on how Jesus lived. We are going to look at a few core issues, the ones critical to our growth and success. We will look at how Jesus dealt with these issues and we will look at how we might follow His way of living.
Each Sunday, we will engage one of these core issues. Then, during the week, we will post some additional ideas, thoughts, suggestions, etc. for you to think about and try. Each of these postings will have a place for you to add your comments that will be posted for all to see. This interactive learning process will be a powerful way for us to apply what God is speaking to each of us.
So, check in often. Read the postings and leave your comments. And, we will grow together in our walk with Christ.
